The causes of suffering
According to the concept of Dependent Origination, when we consider the process of suffering more deeply, we will find that the determinant of human suffering are Kilesa.
Kilesa or defilement means impurities or impairment of mind. There are many kinds of Kilesa mentioned in the Buddhist doctrine such as : greed, hatred, delusion, conceit, wrong view, uncertainly, sloth, restlessness, shamelessness and lack of moral dread. In order to clarify kilesa as causes of suffering, we will concentrate particularly on the following four : Asava, Avijja Tanha and Uppadana. Here we will first consider Asava, or the outflows, which create delusion or ignorance.
